I am not a nun

I bought a couple new books yesterday at my quarterly Lifeway shopping trip. I always find new things that I feel I need to read and apply to my life, so I have to be careful not to spend too much! Actually, this phenomenon tends to happen at any book store. Hmm.

Anyway, one that I got was Only Nuns Change Habits Overhight by Karen Scalf Linamen. I have a big problem of biting off more than I can chew, and choosing to make huge sweeping changes in my life. Hopefully, this book can help my overachieving self come to terms with gradual change.

We'll see. :)

Hilda

I attended the GA Assemblies of God District Ladies Fall Connection (such a long title!) in Warner Robins, GA this weekend. It was a quick overnight trip from Friday afternoon to this afternoon. The worship was so.amazing. Ahh! I just love those times when you can linger in His presence and just soak it up like a nice warm bath. No one cares about what your voice sounds like. You can cry and look rather dumb and no one gives you an weirded-out look. You just feel so free....free to worship.

The speaker for both sessions was Joan Millar from New York. She said something after the worship time last night that struck me anew: we don't want to stop worship because it's what we were created to do. Such a nugget of truth to meditate on!

My favorite song was I Give Myself Away (William McDowell).

I give myself away / I give myself away so You can use me

Here I am, here I stand / Lord, my life is in Your hands
Lord, I’m longing to see / Your desires revealed in me

I give myself away / I give myself away so You can use me

Take my heart, take my life / as a living sacrifice
All my dreams all my plans / Lord I place them in Your hands

I give myself away / I give myself away so You can use me

My life is not my own / to You I belong / I give myself, I give myself to You

As I sang this song, I really made it my heartfelt prayer to the Lord. I realized that it was a reoccurring prayer--kind of like my life's song, I guess--Lord, use my life for Your glory.

Another one of my favorite worship choruses is If You Can Use Anything Lord You Can Use Me. (Actually, I think the title is simply Use Me.) It's old-school, but it definitely cuts to the heart of the matter with no flowery words or complicated imagery.

We went to Olive Garden for lunch, and as we were walking to the entrance, we passed an older lady who looked like she was having difficulty walking. The Lord tugged on my heart to see to her, so I waited at the door of the restaurant in order to hold it open for her.

When I saw she wasn't walking any closer to the entrance, I asked her "Are you coming inside ma'am?"

She replied "No," to which I asked if she needed any help. She told me she would like help getting to her car which was about 20 feet away. I took her by the hand and helped her down the step of the sidewalk and proceeded to walk with her to her Volvo.

We made small talk, and she mentioned how she dislikes it when people call her sweetie, as if she were a child, instead of "Ma'am." I said a silent prayer thanking God for the old-school manners I remembered to exercise! She told me a little about her health and how many people tend to give her free health advice ("Get a cane", "Try a walker", etc.). Then she remarked how I just "offered to help." (What a compliment.)

I told her I was from north of Atlanta, originally from Columbus GA. She used to be in the Air Force. :) I mentioned how my dad was in the Army, and how I appreciated military towns like Warner Robins.

As we finished up our chit-chat, she told me her name is Hilda, and I introduced myself also. I was very glad to meet Hilda today. I think she was an answer to the prayers I sang earlier. I felt God was testing me to see if I would really allow myself to be open to His gentle leading. Thankfully, I can say that I seized the opportunity He placed before me--an opportunity to meet Hilda from Warner Robins and accompany her to her car.

Day 2

So...what's new in Debbie World? I started a new diet yesterday (The Metabolism Miracle). Going well so far except for a chocolate chip cookie and sesame cracker infraction last night (yes, on DAY ONE). I felt bad because last week I asked my friend to make some cookies for our young-adult fellowship group. At the time, I had no idea that I would be on a low-carb diet. Whoops. Anyway, luckily they were small, and I only had two. One of the two offenders gave me an awful headache, so I don't think I'll be breaking the rules anytime soon.

Breakfast today was something new: "Miracle" Silver-Dollar Pancakes made with soy flour, ricotta cheese, eggs, Splenda, and a couple other ingredients. Pictures below.

The batter. It wasn't this yellow in real life (the colors are skewed).
Looks like regular pancake batter!

Hmm. Cooks up like a regular pancake too.

The other five in a portion. I think they're probably a little bigger than a silver dollar. I haven't seen a silver dollar in a long time, so I had to do my best guesstimate.

Finis! Yeah, I burnt one pretty good, as well as the bacon. Still delicious! So that was six "silver-dollar" low-carb pancakes, one egg, and two strips of center-cut bacon.
Plus a cup of herbal tea (not pictured). Yum-O!

I devoured it too fast for a pic of me eating. Then again, who wants to see a picture of me eating?

Funny Dream Moment

So, I had a really neat dream experience last night. I'm dreaming about a movie, and I am watching a funny part when all of a sudden I start to laugh--for real. Out loud. I even woke myself up a little bit (which is how I knew I was physically laughing and not just "dream laughing.") Isn't that funny?

As I was taking a shower, I recalled a conversation I was having with someone who asked, "Have you ever woke up laughing?" At the time I had never experienced that, or had ever heard of it. Now I can proudly and happily say that I have awakened with a giggle. It was great.

Cover your chest

Neat new item featured on E! News tonight:
Chickies by Jules and Meg

Ever needed to wear a cami under a low-cut top or dress, but didn't need the extra bulk? Enter the Chickie: a faux cami that hooks onto your bra.

I think this is a fabulous idea, although at $33 each, a bit pricey.

Similarly, I saw these things called Boob Tube™ by Miss Oops. It's a "modern day bandeau" that also covers the girls from accidental overexposure whilst being lightweight.

I wonder if I can make a DIY version for much less than $33 or $25? Hmm... I feel a home-ec project coming on.

The Mouse

Wow, so it's been a CRAZY day. I was lamenting yesterday in a saved draft post that my life is stupid with boredom when I got home from dinner last night and spotted a mouse in my closet. Holy smoke pipe! I've never seen a mouse running through a house, so it was very disturbing, not to mention the fact that I saw it in two places and I had no mouse traps or poison to kill it with. I basically had to sit tight until the next day.

I freaked out and called the only person who could console me and offer advice--my mom. Brought my landlady's cat up as a living mousetrap, but he was in awe that I actually invited him in and was showing him some love that he didn't get a chance to see the bugger. I put as much food away as I could and eventually fell asleep watching Michael Jackson videos on TV, waking up every so often with thoughts of the little brown intruder in my home.

So, morning rolls in, and I'm like "OK, ok, you got this. Don't be scared. There's still a mouse here somewhere and you may see it while getting ready for work." Psyching myself up for confrontation. Well, it still caught me off guard to see a little mouse head poking through the eye of my range top. Uber ew.

Now I'm kicking myself for not keeping up with my cleaning schedule like I used to. Not that I think my place was gross, but there certainly were a lot more hiding places for something like this to happen (clothes to be put away, a few dishes to wash, etc.). Needless to say, Operation "Straighten and Disinfect This Place From Top to Bottom" is in full effect now.

So, I go to Walmart this morning to buy traps. I don't even know where that is in the store. You'd think it'd be in the home section, but it's back by the trash bags, eerily close to the grocery side of the store. I select the baited sticky pad traps and a non-violent, PETA humane trap door box trap. I decide to use the sticky ones because the mouse is small and I REALLY don't want to pick up a semi-transparent box with a live mouse inside. Ew.

As I come back home at the end of my work day, I'm praying hard. You'd think there was a dead body in my apt. or something. I'm sweating, praying, breathing hard, butterflies in stomach for what I would see on the pad. Is it just one mouse? Is there more than one stuck around? Is it half-stuck, dragging it around with it? Sorry. I'll stop now. Anywhoo, I peek over the stair rail and see that the one on the counter is empty. Whew. I slowly walk up a couple more steps and peek around the half-wall in the kitchen. It's on there. Sigh of relief. I gear up to sweep it away. Prayed again. Thank you God for helping this mouse get caught!

I feel so accomplished right now. It's a nasty accomplishment, but still...relief is here. Still can't eat here yet. That may take another day.

Phil. 4:13 was at work in my life today. I praise God that I conquered my fear. I could have called someone to come and help me, but I prayed and trusted that He would give me strength to face this challenge. Fear is very insidious. If you let it rule in one area of your life, it will seep into other areas as well. So, step it up! What are you shrinking back from in your life?

BONUS: So, I hit up an area on my nightstand that has been home to miscellaneous receipts from my wallet for a few weeks now. I go through the receipts and lo and behold, there's a $20! Wow. That NEVER happens to me. If I have money, I know where it is and how I'm planning on spending it. LOL. So, I feel like God rewarded me for being brave and tackling one of my most hated, most feared things: creepy crawly.

Give God a chance to work in your life today. Yes, in the little things of your life. I promise you won't be disappointed.
